A Shrove Tuesday Liturgy for making pancakes in your household

  •  Gather the ingredients, and print the prayers and bible bits of the liturgy out. Distribute the tasks so that each person can contribute in the process of cooking, reading and praying. Add each ingredient to a bowl and mix as you go, reading the corresponding bible bit and prayer sentence.

Speech-Bubble Our Loving God, We mark this Shrove Tuesday, celebrating with pancakes and remembering the ways your ancient stories and living words combine, calling us to give up greed and find fullness in faith and sweetness in serving. 2. This is brilliant Beth. I am reminded of a Jewish seder, with food, scripture and beautiful, explaining words all thrown in together. I also appreciate the fresh spiritual take on a cultural tradition – Pancake Day – which is close to my heart. You do that so well, and so thoughtfully. Thank you.

    • Thanks Kate. I think we have lots to learn from our ancient brothers and sisters about the integrating of word and sense and love in our households, and living sacramentally.
I love the bible, and it grieves me that somehow in containing it in a book, it now weaves its way less often into our moments of life. Enjoying exploring ways to tangle the threads a bit more.

  3. Thank you for point me to this Beth. I am planning to make a booklet for the kids to read through and take home with them (with reference to you as the source of the idea). We will make the pancake mix together and see if we can cook it or maybe the kids can take it home. I feel blessed and encouraged to have met and learnt from you.
